How to Play Hexagonal Minesweeper

Find all the locations of the mines! Unlike traditional Minesweeper, this game uses a hexagonal grid where each cell is adjacent to six others. With fewer adjacent cells, it’s easier to deduce mine locations, making it a logic puzzle that even beginners can enjoy.

Game Objective

  • Clear the game by finding all the hidden mines on the map.

Difficulty Selection

  • Select the size of the board to play from three levels at the start of the game.

How to Play

  • Once the board is displayed, start by opening the blinking cell.
  • The number on an opened cell indicates how many mines are present in the six adjacent cells (the adjacent cells are highlighted with a light blue border).
  • Cell labeled 2 and its surrounding illustrationIn this example, it means that two of the six adjacent cells contain mines.
  • Open cells you determine to be safe.
  • Place flags on cells you determine to contain mines.
  • If the number of flags placed matches the number on the cell, selecting “Open Surrounding” will open all unopened adjacent cells at once.

Keyboard Controls

  • Open a cell: Hover over a closed cell and press the Spacebar.
  • Place a flag: Hover over a closed cell and press the F key.
  • Remove a flag: Hover over a flagged cell and press the F key.
  • Open surrounding cells: Hover over a numbered cell and press the Spacebar.

Screen Display and Scoring

  • The bottom of the screen shows the total number of hidden mines and the number of mines flagged so far, allowing you to easily track your progress.
  • Your score increases the more time you have left when you clear the game. When playing on a computer, using keyboard controls can improve efficiency and shorten your clear time.

Hexagonal Minesweeper Q&A

Q What does Minesweeper mean?

A Minesweeper means "landmine removal worker." As the name suggests, the goal of this game is to deduce the locations of hidden mines on the grid and identify all of them.

Q How is Hexagonal Minesweeper different from traditional Minesweeper?

A Traditional Minesweeper uses a square grid, while Hexagonal Minesweeper uses a hexagonal grid. This means each cell is adjacent to six others, making it easier to calculate the number of adjacent mines while requiring new strategies to efficiently explore larger areas.

Q What does the number on a cell represent?

A The number on a cell represents how many mines are located in the six adjacent cells. For example, if a cell displays "1," it means there is exactly one mine in the surrounding six cells. Once you identify the location of that mine, you can safely open the remaining five cells.

Q What happens if I open a mine by mistake?

A If you open a mine, the game is immediately over. This tension is what makes Minesweeper exciting. Proceed carefully and think through each move.

Q What should I do if I cannot determine the location of a mine?

A If you cannot determine the location of a mine, avoid opening that cell and move to another area. Focus on opening cells where the mine locations can be easily deduced, and the overall situation will become clearer.

Q What are some tips specific to the hexagonal grid?

A With a hexagonal grid, each cell has only six adjacent cells, making it easier to deduce mine locations. If you're stuck, start by opening cells where the numbers make the mine positions obvious. Additionally, remember that opening a mine will result in immediate game over, so proceed cautiously and take your time to analyze the board.
